Creepy - Kevin Costley - W9390 / 2.95 - Late Elementary - This suspenseful piece in D minor is easy to coordinate so it can be learned quickly for Halloween. In section A, the L.H. uses harmonic 5ths and 6ths, the R.H. plays short phrases with stepwise motion. Section B features longerlegato phrasing with parallel and contrasting motion – just sing the lyrics to create the "creepy" creaking.

Other ideas:

Fruit Salad in a Watermelon Boat-- A fun idea for a scurvy preventing snack that can double as a pirate party decoration is a watermelon boat. Carve the melon lengthwise and trim the edges to look like a ship. Make a mast out of a skewer with a paper skull and crossbones flag flying high! Fill the ship with chunks of melon, pineapple, strawberries, or other colorful fruit. If you have any little toy pirate figurines, stick them around to make things even more authentic!

Fish and Chips--True pirates love their fish. This could be loosely interpreted as Goldfish-shaped snack crackers.

Pirate Punch--No self respecting pirate meal would be complete without pirate fruit punch (you have to prevent scurvy somehow, after all). If you have a more bloodthirsty lot, make red punch and call it shark blood brew. For an extra touch, float some sliced oranges or limes to make it look more festive.

Stationary, Decorations, Favors, Etc:

Treasure Map Scavenger Hunt-- Create a treasure map with clues that take your party guests around your home or party location. Make it fun by adding extra little directions with a pirate theme. For example, you might say "start at the old tree and take 7 steps straight ahead. Spin around three times. Now take 5 jumps toward the road. Come up with a pirate name for yourself." Be creative and make this as funny or involved as you (and your guests) would like. At the end of the hunt, make a big red X out of electrical tape or paper and put the "treasure" on top of it. (Having a pinata as the final treasure is a good way to wrap up this scavenger hunt.)

Pop the Cannon Ball--This is a balloon popping relay race. Fill two large garbage bags with inflated black balloons and put them at one end of your race course. **note--this can be a straight run from one end to the next, or you could put obstacles along the way, such as a long board for the kids to walk the plank on their way to the balloons.** Divide the group into two teams and put them at the other end of the course. Then have them race one at a time to the balloons, take one out and sit/bounce on it until it pops, and race back to tag the hand of their next teammate. The first team with all its balloons popped and pirates back at the home ship wins!

Recital Theme: A Superhero Recital!

Software for the Teaching Studio

I have been working closely with a teacher, trying to find a theory software program that is a good fit for her and her studio. The one feature she really wanted was a program that tracked students' progress. I spoke with some other teachers in the area and the general consensus was that the best fit for her, because of her desire for student tracking, would be the Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory: Software, Educator Version. This series has always been popular, and more than one teacher said if you are looking for instructive software, this is the way to go:

The Groovy Music series consists of three different titles for three different age ranges:

Groovy Shapes: Groovy Shapes is the first of the three programs, and is designed for ages 5 to 7. It teaches the basics of sound, rhythm, pitch and composition using pictures and animation. The “Explore” section includes voiceover instructions to guide students through a series of progressive exercises that teach them about basic music concepts. They then put into practice what they've learned by creating their own music in the “Create” section.

Groovy Jungle: Groovy Jungle introduces children ages 7-9 to notes and notation, ostinato, major and minor, and simple musical terms. More complex musical textures are explored, and additional instruments allow them to experiment further with their own compositions.

Groovy City: In the third program, kids ages 9-11 learn more about notation and complete more complex listening tasks. They are also introduced to question-and-answer prases and the blues scale, so that they can begin to build more sophisticated compositions. This software features a futuristic city theme in Create mode, with a library of sounds with patterns, as well as individual sounds.

Denver Sonatina - by Keith Snell - KJOS# GP439 - This attractive sonatina is not only a delight to hear, but a joy to play. With his feet firmly planted in late-18th century sonata form, the composer integrates mid-19th century harmonies to create a refreshing and masterful tribute to this ever important genre. The Denver Sonatina is in two movements: the first movement in sonata-allegro form, and the second in rondo form. It is especially designed for intermediate level students (comparable in difficulty to the Clementi Sonatinas Op. 36, Nos. 2 and 3) and has only very few reaches to the octave. The name "Denver" has no musical connotations; rather, the piece is named for the location of its premier. Sample HERE.

Dolly Suite Opus 56 - by Gabriel Faure and Weekley & Arganbright - for One Piano, Four Hands - KJOS# WP609 - Born in 1845, Gabriel Fauré is considered to be one of the greatest French composers of the nineteenth century. His family was not musical, being butchers , smiths and military officers, but they encouraged young Fauré to develop his musical skills. He had excellent training from his teacher, Camille Saint-Saëns, who remained his lifelong friend.

Dolly is a collection of six pieces written over a period of three years (1894-1897). They were composed in honor of Hélene nicknamed "Dolly," who was the daughter of Fauré's dear friend, the singer Emma Bardac. (Emma later became Debussy's second wife.)

The opening Berceuse (Lullaby) suggests a moment of childhood peace and tranquility, perhaps Dolly rocking her doll to sleep. The second piece, Mi-a-ou is livelie; its title has been interpreted in two different ways. Emile Vuillermoz sees in it "the capricious bounds of the favorite family cat, its quick turns, its zigzag starts, its sudden cajolery, after which...it at last rests in the lap of its little mistress." On the other hand, Marguerite Long, on the basis of her friendship with Fauré, asserts that the title is the nickname for Dolly's brother, Raoul.

The Le jardin de Dolly (Dolly's Garden) represents a quiet stroll through a lovely flower garden. The mood is smimilar to that of Berceuse but the melody is less predictable with sudden turns toward chromaticism. Kitty-Valse is a sort of companion piece to Mi-a-ou, but its rhythm is more straightforward, and we find many unexpected turns in harmony, Its strong accents contrast with delicate, swirling scale patterns. Marguerite Long tells us that "Kitty" is a corruption of "Ketty'" the name of the family dog!

Tendresse (Tenderness) is the most touching piece of the set. It suggests a conversation between am other and daughter. In the middle section the two melodc voices are shared by the primo and secondo players in a canon form with bass accompaniment. The seconds half of the first theme features whole-tone effects. In total contrast to this gentle piece, the final piece is Le pas Espagnol (Spanish Dance), which Long says was inspired by a bronze equestrian statue that stood on the mantlepiece in Madame Bardac's house and was admired by young Dolly. Vuillermoz believes it depictsDolly pretending to be a Spanish dancer, wrapped in her mother's shawl. Samples HERE and HERE.

Russian Gems - by Weekley & Arganbright - KJOS# WP608 - This beautiful volume is comprised of six works by great Russian composers. Arensky's "Cuckoo" is an excellent piece for contrast between staccato and legato playing. His "Fugue on a Russian Theme" is the perfect example to introduce the young pianist with fugal writing, incorporating subject, inversion, episode, stretto, and augmentation. Three exceptionally fine pieces by Gliere are skillfully crafted in the Romantic. Samples HERE and HERE.

An American Rhapsody Piano Trio No. 2 - by Eugenie Rocherolle - KJOS# GP437 - A nostalgic portrait of the moods and nuances of American music, this is a significant addition to early-advanced piano trio literature inspiring to audiences and performers alike. This emotion-packed medley of various styles and themes is held tightly together by themes all based upon five notes of the opening piano statement. Piano Parent Workshop: What your studio parents can expect to learn

Our Piano Parent workshop is tomorrow! This event is for the parents of new or current piano students, and is designed to help these parents understand how to best help their child succeed at the piano. That is tomorrow, September 10th from 11:00 to 12:00PM (at the latest!). The event is designed for parents, but children are certainly welcome! As are piano teachers, so feel free to join us, if you would like.

In case you have any questions about what we'll be sharing with your parents during the event, I wanted to share the program. We will have 3 speakers for this workshop:

I (Val) will be speaking briefly from the perspective of a piano parent, who (despite having every reason to know better) made a lot of mistakes along the way but, with help, have ironed out the issues and now my daughter practices effectively, without prompting, and loves to play the piano. A lot of this is her nature, but it took quite a but of nurturing to get her there!

Local teacher Camille Cartaya will be offering the perspective of a piano teacher, briefly explaining the training that teachers undergo, and letting parents know how much work actually goes into lessons and lesson planning. She will also offer some practice suggestions, and will let parents know what to listen for when their child is practicing, both the good and the bad.

Last but most certainly not least, Barry Frost will be speaking about instruments. We will have quite a few instruments available to compare and contrast (for example, a keyboard and old used upright piano of dubious quality, then a nice, appropriate-for-lessons weighted digital piano, and quality used and new acoustic pianos). He will also let parents know how to shop for a used piano, and the things they should look for when shopping for a used piano on Craigslist or from another consumer.

We are going to try and keep the workshop under an hour in length because we know people are busy, so we are going to make our presentations, and then send the parents home with some handouts to keep everything fresh and give them something to refer back to if they have questions.

Responsibilities of a Piano Parent

1.) Have your child make a commitment to lessons and regular practice, and you make one, as well. Your child will commit to piano at the same proportionate level you do. Let your child know that they should uphold their end of the bargain by putting in quality, regular practice, since their commitment involves not only themselves but also you AND the teacher. Make it clear to your child that the piano teacher's time (and your time and money!) are valuable and should not be wasted on poorly prepared lessons.

2.) Provide the highest quality instrument possible. Provide your child with a nice piano, and they willl be proud of it and want to play on it. A quality instrument will allow a child to progress at their own speed, instead of potentially being held back by a non-responsive instrument. Have that instrument in a place in the home where the student will be around people but away from distractions. If the piano is in the same room as a television, try to place the piano where the player cannot see the TV.

3.) Respect your piano teacher. Treat them like the professional they are. Be respectful of their time and schedule. Maintain open and honest communication with them, especially if you have questions or issues. Be cautious as to how you talk about the teacher or the teacher’s lessons in front of your child. Keep in mind that pedagogy has changed since you were a piano student, and if your child is learning something differently from the way you were taught, that does not mean it is wrong. If you disagree with the way your child is learning, speak with the teacher about it before correcting your child.

4.) Be a polite piano parent. *Be on time for lessons, and be on time with payment for lessons. *Notify the teacher of absences as early as possible. *Don’t expect a make-up lesson or a refund for missed lessons - be prepared to abide by studio policy. *If you sit in on lessons, don’t interrupt without being invited to do so by the teacher. *If you are waiting in the studio for your children's lessons to be completed, remain quiet and do not interrupt. *Pick up your children punctually at the end of the lesson time. This will assure that your child gets the maximum benefit from the allotted time with the teacher. Be a positive example! If you blow off or forget piano lessons regularly, it sends a strong message to your child that piano isn’t important.

5.) Most importantly: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! We all want our children to have fun learning piano, but piano lessons only happen once a week - progress at the piano really happens at home, as the child learns and progresses through regular practice. The real fun to be had is when the child is able to the play the music they want to play, a point reached by - you guessed it - regular practice. With some ingenuity and enthusiasm, routine practicing cannot only become fun but rewarding for a child. There does come a time when the child is able to play well enough, that they will play, (and practice) for their own enjoyment. Until that day, there are steps you can take to help your child enjoy practicing. On the reverse side of this page we have offered suggestions for quality practice, as well as ways you can help your child enjoy practice. (see reverse)

Not every student understands what good practice is. If your child doesn’t understand HOW to practice, speak with the teacher and come up with a plan. Put the plan in writing, or type it up and print it out, and post it at the piano or in the student’s lesson assignment book.
Schedule practice into their daily activities.
Sit and listen to them play. Don’t just assume because you hear the piano being played that the student is practicing well and what they’re supposed to be practicing. A student can sit at the piano for 15 minutes playing and not have a productive practice session. The quality of practice is just as important as the quantity. If their assigned amount of practice time seems insurmountable, break it up into smaller segments. Instead of 30 minutes straight, for example, try two 15-minute sessions, or three 10-minute sessions.
Praise, praise, praise! Look for some reason to compliment your child, if nothing else it may be praise for simply sitting up tall at the piano. Give them the message that you are glad that they are trying. Give them the message that they are doing a good job.
Create incentives. Make a sticker incentive chart, or fill a treasure chest with inexpensive Dollar store toys and let your child select an item from there once they’ve achieved a goal (you should work with your teacher to come up with goals).
Create incentives even for activities you would let your child do anyway. For instance, “practice your piano first, then you can go ride your bike.” If allowed in your household, allow your child to earn time on the computer, TV or game system for practicing.
Don’t practice mistakes. Mistakes are allowed and even expected, the trick is simply not to practice them. When the same mistake is played multiple times in a row, the student is well on their way to becoming an EXPERT at the mistake. Students will practice a line of music over and over again, and when they finally play it correctly they then immediately move on to the next line. The problem with this is that they played it incorrectly perhaps 5 times, and correctly only once. So, the next time you get to that line, which way are the fingers more likely to remember, the incorrect way or the correct way? The incorrect way. As parents, we need to help our children recognize that practice does not end when you play it correctly--that's when practice begins.
Play games and make it fun! Use flash cards to drill and play matching games. Find fun things to do at the piano, like the game Left to Right: Have the student select items to use as a visual - army men, mini teacups, small balls, any small item that you have in multiple quantities will do. Place all those items on the piano on the left side of they keyboard. Every time the student successfully completes a small goal - say, playing a tough passage correctly, 3 times in a row - they move one item to the right side of the keyboard. Practice ends when they have moved all items from one side of the keyboard to another, or they receive a prize for moving all the items. Items like this can also be used to have the student find notes on the keyboard (“Put an army man on an ‘F’ key”), or build scales (‘Put a bouncy ball on every note in the C Major scale”) or chords.

The Piano Festival went smashingly on Saturday! The PIANOthon raised $277.55 for the Alzheimer's Association, and we saw lots of potential piano students who wanted to 'Discover the Piano' (and gave out lots of teacher contact info!). It really was a fabulous day, with an incredible vibe to it. We have to thank the teachers who so generously and graciously volunteered their time, and of course the students and parents. What a wonderful day! I posted some photos on Saturday, but I wanted to post some more:

Dollarhide’s Music Center is pleased to announce we are hosting a ‘Piano Orientation and Parent Workshop’!

When: Saturday, September 10^th

Time: 11:00AM to 12:00PM

We all know that parental involvement can play a huge role in the success of piano students, but not every parent knows HOW to help their student, especially those parents with no musical background.

Our goal for this event is to offer parents practical advice on how to provide their child with the very best opportunities to help them succeed and progress at the piano. We would like to cover topics such as:

Practice habits
Attendance issues (timeliness, missed lessons, make-ups, etc)
??? We need your help! What else do you think piano parents need to know?

We will also provide these parents with the opportunity to SEE, HEAR, and FEEL for themselves the difference between a keyboard and a real piano!

We welcome any suggestions you might have for topics or specific points you think would be beneficial to parents. If you have something you would like us to share with at this event, or have a question, please contact Val!

Jazz Debonaire - by Martha Mier - Intermediate Piano Duet - Alfred# 37367 - $4.50 - Martha Mier's name is synonymous with jazz, and this duet does not disappoint. The trademark Mier jazz sound is found throughout this sophisticated and "debonair" piece. Written in F major and 4/4 meter, the opening theme brings to mind a soft shoe dance with its use of staccato in both parts and a playful melody in the primo. The A-B-A form allows the secondo to have the melody in the B section, creating equal playing opportunities for both primo and secondo.

Hopscotch - by Joyce Grill - Early Intermediate Piano Duet - Alfred# 37601 - $4.50 - This timeless childhood game is depicted in an energetic duet in 4/4 meter that doubles as an excellent tool for reinforcing staccato technique. Students will enjoy exaggerating the hopscotch-type motion that is created by the staccatos. The piece begins in C major and then “hops” through the key of F minor before returning to the home key.

Swing Your Partner! by Kim Williams - Early Intermediate Piano Duet - Alfred# 37602 - $4.50 - Students are sure to enjoy the “down-home” sound of this happy square dance. Both parts share the melody that stays mostly in a five-finger position and the accompaniment that features broken chords divided between the hands. Written in 4/4 meter, the piece begins in the key of G major and ends in the key of F major. Repeated melodic and rhythmic themes aid in learning.

Great Beginnings - by Catherine Rollin - Intermediate Piano Duet - Alfred# 37603 - $4.50 - This lively and joyful duet makes the perfect opening piece for a recital or duet festival. Beginning quietly and then growing in dynamics as well as texture, the melody features blocked and broken chords with a syncopated rhythm. The accompaniment alternates between lush broken chords and more rhythmic blocked chords. Both players get to play the melody and experience the fun of the accompaniment.

Saturday Night Hoedown - by Robert Vandall - Intermediate Piano Duet - Alfred# 37604 - $4.50 - All of the spirit and excitement of a Saturday night dance is captured in this rollicking duet. Filled with rhythmic vitality, this music will not disappoint. The Vandall sound is evident, and the slight modal flair (G mixolydian) adds to the charm of the piece. Both parts are equal in difficulty and contain such elements as syncopation, accents, staccato, and blocked chords. Written in 4/4 meter, the sixteenth note passages are divided between the hands and create a fun visual effect as well.
